 Ministry Synopsis
Community Outreach Ministries operates numerous ministries and oversees multiple
works in its efforts to minister to the broken and wounded of our community.
21st Judicial Drug Court
a. COM and its volunteers lead weekly group sessions/Bible studies for Drug Court participants, helping them to discover the help, the hope and healing that only God can provide, as they struggle with their addictions.
b. COM provides individual pastoral counseling and care for individual Drug Court participants and their families, helping them deal with the destruction that addiction has brought to their lives and helping them to establish a new drug free life.
c. COM serves as a bridge to connect participants and their physical and spiritual needs with the numerous resources available to us as they deal with the difficulties of starting a clean and sober lifestyle.
d. COM and its volunteers offer daily emotional support and counsel for Drug Court participants.
e. Every year, COM and its partners help to provide Christmas for many of the Drug Court participant families who have no resources to provide it themselves.
f. COM meets weekly with the Drug Court oversight team and serves as a tool, a valuable resource, to help the team as they plan and work with each individual Drug Court participant.
Outside the Lines
a. COM provides a chaplain to work with high school athletes, being available to offer support, guidance and instruction to athletes in public schools. we help them to learn life long lessons from their athletic experiences.
b. Every Thursday during high school football season, COM's senior minister either speaks to or brings in a guest speaker to speak to the Brentwood High School football team, representing over 75 players and coaches each week. These 45 minute sessions, entitled Outside the Lines, address topics such as responsibility, character, attitude, team, leadership, being men of faith and various other life impacting topics.
c. We provide support and emotional care for the coaches, athletes and their families on a day to day basis.
Williamson County Jail
a. Manna Ministry – every week COM volunteers visit the jail pods with book carts filled with hundreds of Christian books, donated by numerous COM partners. The volunteers check out reading material to inmates, giving them spiritual food, or "Manna", to feed on during the long hours of incarceration.
b. Inmate chaplain – COM maintains an office within the jail itself, staffed by a volunteer inmate chaplain, to provide pastoral counsel and support for over 340 inmates who are in our jail on any given day.
c. Training and oversight of jail ministries – COM trains over 120 volunteers every year who visit, provide spiritual counsel, conduct classes and worship services, and minister in other ways to the inmates. COM trains, provides credentials and oversees all ministries that go on in the jail.
d. A.F.F.I.R.M. – volunteers with COM operate A Friends and Family of Inmates Resource Ministry every week. These volunteers spend time on Saturdays and Sundays ministering to the families of inmates as they wait, often for long periods of time, to visit their loved ones behind bars. Our volunteers offer drinks and snacks, coloring books for the kids, lots of love and compassion, and connect these families with much needed resources to meet their various needs.
Williamson Sheriff's Office
a. Employee chaplain – COM provides a chaplain who daily delivers support for over 240 employees at the Sheriff's Office, and their family members. These employees face a very unique stress in this culture. They benefit greatly from support, pastoral counsel, and guidance from our ministry. We provide untold hours of personal support for employees, including conducting weddings, funerals, and various other services.
b. C.O.P.S. Bible Study – COM offers a weekly Bible study for off duty law enforcement officers. The Caring Officers Pursuing Spirituality study presents a non-threatening, comfortable environment for officers to learn from God's word. The textual study is presented in a way that speaks clearly to them and to their world.
c. Emergency response – COM is on call 24 hours a day to respond to emergencies that need the crisis and emotional support that we are trained to offer. We respond regularly to accidents, suicides, shootings, domestic struggles, and various other incidents where the officers and citizens involved can benefit from our presence and the support we can offer. COM delivers death notifications throughout the county, delivering the life-changing news of the death of a loved one and providing critical support at this most painful moment.
d. Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) – COM's senior minister is trained in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing and is part of a state-wide "on call" network of trained professionals ready to respond to critical incidents involving law enforcement officers.
e. Every year, COM and its partners help to provide Christmas for Sheriff's Office employees families who cannot afford it themselves, taking care of 10-15 families per year.
In addition to these efforts, COM is called upon regularly to minister in various situations throughout the community due to our reputation for love, compassion and the ability to minister to broken and wounded people.
